Republicans Are Showing Their True Intentions — And They Aren’t Pretty
Earlier this month, House Republicans voted to extend the Bush tax cuts.
Apparently, this is what they consider a top legislative priority — at a time when unemployment is stuck well past 8 percent, and millions of American families are struggling just to get by.
This certainly isn’t the first time the GOP has worked to coddle corporations and the wealthiest Americans at the expense of the rest of us.
Meanwhile, Republicans are trying to use the high unemployment rate to gain political leverage for the upcoming election without doing anything to remedy the situation.
Republicans are just more interested in protecting hedge fund managers and corporate titans than helping Americans land jobs.
Democrats certainly haven’t been perfect. They’ve compromised more than they needed to. But at least they’ve made some solid attempts to bring economic relief to middle America.
For his part, President Obama has been adamant about the need to extend tax breaks for the middle class. Republicans have grumbled that letting the tax breaks for top earners expire would stifle economic growth. But the President has rightly noted that his tax plan would benefit 97 percent of all small business owners. And assuring small business owners that their taxes will not rise will give them the confidence to create new jobs.
Clearly, the President understands something Republicans don’t — that the road to recovery isn’t paved by protecting the nation’s affluent, but by giving a hand-up to working Americans.
The GOP’s brazen disregard for the middle class should come back to bite them at the polls in November. But if Republicans somehow defy the odds to capture the White House and control Congress, people struggling to make ends meet can expect to see their situation get even worse. The GOP has already threatened to cut unemployment benefits and shred large parts of the social safety net.
Let’s take action this November and put politicians into office who are truly committed to addressing the country’s jobs crisis and restoring the American middle class.
And be sure to join our new effort: Bee Mad @ the GOP! We’ve committed ourselves to pointing out the many ways Republicans are failing working Americans and urging lawmakers to finally get serious about fixing our country.
