Union of Unemployed Targets Sen. Bunning for Blocking Jobless Bill

Washington, D.C., February 26, 2010 – Kentucky GOP Sen. Jim Bunning’s one-man filibuster of a bill that would extend unemployment benefits for millions of jobless Americans is triggering nationwide outrage, including a call for his ouster from baseball’s Hall of Fame.

“One United States Senator, Jim Bunning, is adding a ton of pain to America’s jobless,” declared Rick Sloan, acting executive director of Ur Union of Unemployed, a grass roots organization for unemployed Americans. “His heartless actions mean millions will not receive their unemployment checks. For his stance, he should be ejected from the Hall of Fame and installed in the Hall of Shame.”

More than 1 million people will lose unemployment benefits in March if Congress does not approve legislation to extend the payments, according to an estimate from the National Employment Law Project

“It is an outrage for one senator to stand in the way of desperately needed help for millions of unemployed Americans,” said Sloan. “His legacy as a great ball player is about to be surpassed by his reputation as an obstinate and uncaring ideologue.”

Ur Union of Unemployed, or UCubed, is a community service project of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) designed to assist the millions of unemployed and underemployed Americans, and to provide them with a structure that allows them to take advantage of their growing numbers. That is really jacked up that a representative would want to do that to millions of Americans. Why should Jim Bunning care? He’s not unemployed, he’s probably not upside down in his house or way behind on his bills. Being a congressman or a senator does not give anybody carte blanche to settle personal scores at the expense of U.S. voters and tax payers! When you let your personal feelings affect your professional judgement it’s time to step down.

  2. I could not agree more Jenifer! It is time that every elected official face the consequences of their actions. This is a prime example of how out of touch politicians are, and it is time to remind them they are replaceable.

    Thank you for your comment!

What a scumbag an (‘m being nice)! I have probably applied to 400 or more jobs and have had only 1 interview in a year. This will probably force me to sale my home. I am 48 and have worked since I was 14 AND NEVER laid off or fired until last year. I am only collecting $185/wk, thanks to companies who want to employ people as 1099s and not have to pay benefits. At least twice a month I am in tears when I have to pay bills. I do sit around the house – but it is not enjoyable as many peopley imply – because I can’t afford to waste the gas! What a POS Bunning is!!!!!

I agree the money should come out of tarp funds, but I would not let a million people suffer just because of my ego. think man, more bankruptcies, foreclosures, people on the streets, starvation, worse economy, etc. At least think of the kids.

This is what I sent the @$$:

Shame on you, I’m 60 years old and look for work every day, my saving are gone, and because of you and your posturing I will loose my home and become homeless and loose everything I have worked for all my life. That unemployment check was the only thing keeping me with a roof over my head. I will not be able to pay my mortgage or bills next month. There are millions of good people out here hanging by a thread, thanks to the collapse of Republican supported system YOU sir are to blame not only for this mess we are in but will be responsible for ME and many others who will become homeless just because you want to prove a point. We are the least among you, yet you used us, the desperate unemployed to prove a point. Despicable, heartless and cruel only touches the surface of your lack of compassion for your fellow human being. So much for those “christian values” you tout.

He would much rather help out Haitians, CEO’s, bankers and Wall Street? While U.S. unemployed are losing their homes and apartments? Living in tent cities? lining up in privately run soup kitchens not subsidized by government funds? Losing what very little we all have left? this is the first I’ve heard of this, but this kind of attitude about our own people really ticks me off.
