Uncle Sam isn’t helping to improve our financial situation. Big business seems to be making employment worse. Is there a solution? I think there is, but the process is unpleasant and unwanted by both goverment and big business. We can’t force anyone to employ us and we can’t force the rich to change their strangle hold on the economy. We can do what our ancestors did to survive years ago. It won’t line our pockets with money, but it will pull us together and solve many of our living condition problems. A roofer with bad plumbing can trade service with a plumber with a bad roof. A community can group together to help their neighbor to rebuild a house destroyed by natural disaster. A doctor can exchange services for construction work. Bartering helped to sustain our forefathers through rough times before and it can do it again. If the powers that be refuse to help us, we can help each other. We should list our skills and needs to each other and work out our own solutions to sustainability until things get better. All it will cost us is a little sweat and time. It won’t make us rich and famous, but it will help us to endure and grow together as it was before. We have nothing else to lose.

Many jobless people have reached a conclusion that captures the depth of the unemployment crisis: Looking for a job is a waste of time.
The economy is growing. Yet it’s creating few jobs. That’s why in the past eight months, 1.8 million people without jobs left the labor market. Many had grown so frustrated by their failure to find a job that they threw up their hands and quit looking for one. Christopher Leonard – AP Business Writer
